Downtown Missoula Flower Basket Program Street Decor

The Downtown Flower Basket Program is one of many initiatives created and managed by the Downtown Missoula Partnership in its effort to make Downtown Missoula as beautiful and welcoming as possible. Learn more about this program, its history, and how to support it below.

What Is the Downtown Flower Basket Program?

A core piece of the Downtown Missoula Street Décor Program, the Flower Basket Program was established in 1981 when local artist Russell Smith, son of Russell Smith Sr. (for whom the Federal Courthouse is named), was hired to fabricate 72 handcrafted black metal baskets from barrels. Each basket, built between 1981 and 1985, features a unique design. The Downtown Missoula Partnership (DMP) has managed this program ever since.

When Are the Downtown Flower Baskets Installed?

Each year, the DMP team collaborates with Pink Grizzly Greenhouse to prepare and deliver the flower baskets downtown, ensuring they are installed before the University of Montana’s Commencement in May. In 2025, the DMP plans to hang 150 baskets throughout the district. Many will be placed in the original barrel hangers crafted by Russell Smith, while the remaining will be installed on brackets added during a 2010 expansion.

Who Installs and Maintains the Downtown Flower Baskets?

DMP staff install and maintain the baskets, aiming to keep them up through UM’s Homecoming each fall. The DMP waters the baskets seven days a week and twice daily when temperatures exceed 80°F. Staff also regularly deadhead the flowers.

How Can I Support the Downtown Missoula Flower Basket Program?

Many local businesses and individuals contribute time and donations to fund and install the baskets. Additionally, several Downtown business owners independently plant flowers and greenery in boxes and barrels outside their storefronts and in street corner bulb-outs, adding even more color to the city.

These efforts help maintain Missoula’s identity as the Garden City and create a thriving, welcoming Downtown. Help propagate and bloom a vibrant Downtown Missoula by donating to the Downtown Missoula Flower Basket Program.
