Downtown Missoula Partnership Completes the Downtown Legacy Trail & Wayfinding Kiosks

PLACEMAKING AND WAYFINDING THROUGHOUT DOWNTOWN MISSOULA

Downtown Missoula Partnership Completes the Downtown Legacy Trail & Wayfinding Kiosks

As part of the Missoula Comprehensive Wayfinding Plan adopted in 2013, Downtown Missoula has expanded its wayfinding system with six additional kiosks, bringing the total to ten, including those along the Missoula Legacy Trail. Strategically placed throughout the Heart of Downtown, these kiosks serve as both navigational aids and historical storytelling elements, enhancing the sense of place for residents and visitors alike.

Each kiosk features a historical interpretation panel on one side and a detailed map on the other, helping people navigate the city while connecting with Missoula’s rich and diverse past. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the kiosks highlight a wide range of perspectives, offering a deeper look into Downtown Missoula’s layered history.

The Downtown Missoula Partnership collaborated with several key partners on this project. Historical Research Associates curated all of the historical content, ensuring accuracy and depth in storytelling. Art and Image Design LLC led the design of the content and maps, creating an engaging visual experience and ensuring cohesion between all the kiosks. Pro Construction Services was responsible for the fabrication of the kiosks, while Reynolds Construction handled all of the concrete work to ensure a durable and accessible installation.

These kiosks also align with the 36 pedestrian directional signs located throughout Downtown, completing the Downtown Wayfinding System and enhancing connectivity across the district. This project was funded by the Business Improvement District (BID) and the Missoula Downtown Foundation (MDF).

Completed in March 2025, the Wayfinding Kiosk Project has made Downtown more accessible, informative, and engaging. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, the Downtown Legacy Trail offers a self-guided walking tour that deepens your connection to and knowledge of Missoula’s vibrant history.

The ten kiosks include:

  • Gathering at the Place of Little Bull Trout – Missoula Public Library
  • Celebrating Community and the Arts – Missoula Art Museum
  • Crossroads of Commerce – Central Park Garage
  • Arrival of the Automobile – ZACC
  • Missoula’s Restricted District – Front & Ryman
  • A Growing City – Broadway & Higgins
  • Missoula Mercantile – Front & Pattee
  • Travel to Missoula – North Higgins & Alder
  • Celebrating in the Streets – Spruce & Higgins
  • Welcome to Caras Park – Caras Park Pavilion

The kiosks offer an engaging way to explore Downtown Missoula, blending history, wayfinding, and placemaking into a meaningful and memorable experience for all.
