This holiday season, all Missoulians are encouraged to support our local economy and small businesses by shopping and dining in Downtown Missoula during Small Business Season. Downtown businesses are extending hours of operation, offering special promotions, and providing personal touches and connections along the way.
Spending at locally-owned small businesses keeps dollars circulating in our own community and economy. During times of crisis – such as the COVID pandemic – supporting small businesses in Missoula means those businesses can keep their doors
open, their people employed and their families fed.

Each year, small businesses band together to promote the importance of shedding the big box stores and supporting locally owned, small businesses the day following Black Friday. Known as Small Business Saturday (SBS), this shopping holiday has created a large following all across the country. Since 2016, it is estimated that shoppers supported small businesses by spending over $15.4 BILLION during SBS. It is a trend that is spreading across the country….come out and support your community by Shopping & Dining Small during Small Business Saturday.

- Small businesses have created over 8 million jobs since 1990.
- Small businesses donate 250% more than larger businesses to non-profits and community causes (Source: Seattle Good Business Network).
- If you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in your local economy. If you were to spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy (Source: Civic Economics Study in Grand Rapids, Michigan).
- Small Business Saturday became officially recognized by the U.S. Government in 2011.
- In 2018, U.S. consumers reported spending a record high of an estimated $17.8 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday. Over the years, Small Business Saturday spending has now reached a reported estimate of $103 billion since the day began in 2010 — that’s $103 billion over 9 days alone.
- A National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) survey found that 55% of US consumers are aware of Small Business Saturday, and a whopping 83% say it inspires them to shop small throughout the year, too (Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey).
