River City Roots Fest

Fast Facts

August 23-24, 2014

The ninth annual River City Roots Festival Schedule of Events for August 22-24 is final, and the music lineup just might be the best ever. Saturday’s Main Stage presentation features mostly bluegrass and newgrass, while Sunday’s entertainment showcases New Orleans-style jazz, funk and zydeco music.

The Music on Main will open Saturday, Aug. 23 at 12:30 pm with Missoula’s own Whizpops (www.thewhizpops.com), followed by the Lil’ Smokies (www.thelilsmokies.com) and New Reeltime Travelers (www.newreeltimetravelers.com). The Deadly Gentlemen (www.deadlygentlemen.com) and Sam Bush (www.sambush.com) will play into the evening.

Sunday’s lineup will feature Missoula’s Soul City Brass Band in the morning, Shakewell and Reverend Slanky in the afternoon, while Ear Phunk (www.earphunk.com) and Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas (www.zydecochachas.com) will be visiting from the New Orleans area for the Sunday evening display.

“We are really excited about this year’s festival,” said Ellen Buchanan, chair of the Roots Fest committee. “All of the events are looking bigger and better than ever. None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors. As you are enjoying all the fun, please be sure to thank them.”

The 2014 Roots schedule introduces a stand-up paddle board race on the Clark Fork River, as well as a Roots-based, family-friendly Friday event at the Top Hat Lounge with entertainment by the ZACC Girls Rock Camp.

This year the Roots Run will start an hour later at 10 am on Sunday, and the finish will return to Main Street, crossing Higgins on Spruce Street and crossing Broadway on Ryman Street.

In addition to Music on Main and the four-mile run, Roots Fest features a Juried Art Show showcasing 30-35 talented artists from around the region. Artists can still apply online at www.missouladowntown.com until June 30.

The Family Fun Festival – which draws thousands of kids and their families to Caras Park – will showcase nearly all of the Missoula organizations that serve families, including SpectrUM Science Center, Animal Wonders, Mismo Gymnastics and much more. Missoula groups interested in joining the fun can contact the Missoula Downtown Association to participate.

River City Roots Festival is an admission-free festival that draws more than 15,000 people to Missoula, thanks to the generosity of the local business community. Major sponsors for this year’s event include the Missoulian, Montana Radio Company, Big Sky Brewing, Good Food Store, First Interstate Bank, Children’s Dentistry of the Rockies, Community Medical Center, DJ&A, P.C., First Security Bank, Holiday Inn Downtown, Missoula Federal Credit Union, Shanti Guitars, WGM Group, Territorial Landworks and many others.
