YWCA Missoula's bi-annual Women's Leadership Series will be held Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. beginning February 12. Sessions will take place at the YWCA's Planet Kids, which is located in the basement of Missoula Aging Services at 337 Stephens Avenue. Tuition is $500, and scholarships are available. Applications can be downloaded from www.ywcaofmissoula.org and are due by Friday, Feb. 5. To learn more contact Sally Mullen at 543.6691 or smullen@ywcaofmissoula.org.

The eight-week series runs through April 2 and is designed to reconnect women to their "best selves" in a safe and welcoming environment, said Sally Mullen, director of Women's Leadership at the YWCA.

"We ask women to do the difficult work of figuring out who they are and who they want to be in their lives and in the workplace," said Mullen, who has managed and consulted with nonprofits and small businesses since 1979. "This process helps them clarify their ambitions and passions, as well as their leadership abilities."

"This was a great chance to learn leadership from the inside out in a fun and positive atmosphere,” said Jean Zosel, station manager of KECI-TV, who went through the series last fall. “I highly recommend it."

Euell, director of the YWCA's girls leadership program, GUTS!, will co-facilitate the series with Mullen.

"Your best life and your best work are one in the same," said Euell. "We want to help women realize they don't have to try to satisfy the demands of everyone around them, which is such a common problem among women."

According to Mullen and Euell, participants will:

Analyze strengths as leaders and strengthen innate leadership abilities
Appreciate differences between male and female leadership styles
Clarify ambitions and passions
Identify barriers to success and seek out solutions
Bring greater awareness to interactions with others
Network about local leadership opportunities
Increase awareness of traditional female behaviors that may undermine credibility
Look at change models
Learn flexible leadership/communication techniques that apply to more than one setting
Identify and embrace personal values and put them to work
Examine how attitude shapes leadership

Close Your Eyes, Open Your Mind…Dining in Darkness     Mar 20th 2010 6:00PM
Location: DoubleTree Hotel
Imagine sitting in a fine restaurant on the banks of the Clark Fork River and not being able to see a thing. Imagine eating fresh greens, sizzling steak, and creamy gelato, seeing nothing and relying totally on taste, smell, touch and texture. Imagine just trying to find your water glass…

On March 20th, 2010, Hellgate High School Senior, Jane Shober, and the DoubleTree Hotel team up to bring the first ever Dining in Darkness to Missoula, Montana. Dining in Darkness is a unique sensory awareness experience that will take guests on a journey of taste, sound, and touch…all in the dark. Blindfolded diners will be met with delectable aromas emanating from food and drink, tactile encounters with elusive entrées, and live music for listening pleasure. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to Foundation Fighting Blindness to fund research seeking to prevent, treat and cure retinal degenerative diseases, and to Missoula County Public Schools to purchase classroom technology for students who are low vision or blind.

Dining in Darkness began in Germany when a blind clergyman began entertaining his guests blindfolded, and the concept is now replicated across Europe and in many large U.S. cities. The centerpiece of a Hellgate High School Senior Project, this event intends to afford diners the experience of eating and socializing without sight. “People dining in darkness usually find their other senses heightened,” says the event’s planner, Jane Shober, “and the experience will hopefully give guests a glimpse into the world of people who are blind or low-vision.”

Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at Rockin’ Rudy’s.

Snow Geese Migration at Freezeout Lake     Mar 21st 2010 7:00AM
Location: Freezeout Lake
Contact: MNHC
Phone: 327-0405
Website: www.MontanaNaturalist.org
Freezeout Lake is Montana’s primary snow goose staging area, a place where as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans gather and rest before flying onward. In a series of shorter flights, the gees make their way to nesting grounds on the wind swept extreme northwest arctic coast of Canada. The snow geese usually reach Freezeout in early March, where they rest up from a nearly 1,000 mile flight from California.

Spend an inspiring day watching thousands of migrating snow geese ( and other birds) at Freezeout Lake. Trip will be hosted by snow goose expert and FWP volunteer Mike Schwitters.

Cost $30 MNHC members, $40 non-members.

Call 327-0405 to register. Space is limited.
Teachers: 3 OPI credits available.

With objects, interactive components, and many never-before-seen photographs, this will be the biggest exhibit installation at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula in several years. Because of the chaos of installation the Museum will be open free with the permanent exhibit available for viewing.

Lunafest    Mar 24th 2010 7:00PM
Location: Wilma Theatre
Contact: YWCA
Phone: 543-6691
Website: www.lunafest.org
LUNAFEST, a nationally-touring film festival that showcases short films by, for and about women, announces 11 unique films selected for the Missoula showing. The festival arrives at Missoula’s Wilma Theatre on Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. and features a film directed by local TV news anchor Hasalyn Harris and Login Modine. Tickets are $10 or $5 for students, and can be purchased by calling 543.6691.

Eighty-five percent of the proceeds will benefit the YWCA’s GUTS! girls leadership program, with LUNAFEST’s national partner, the Breast Cancer Research Fund, receiving 15 percent.

“It’s important for girls to have role models like the LUNAFEST filmmakers, and for them to know that the world is wide open for them to pursue their hopes and dreams,” said Jen Euell, GUTS! director at YWCA Missoula.

According to Euell, the money raised will fund scholarships for GUTS! summer wilderness adventures for girls ages 11 to 18 whose families can’t afford the $300 fee.

This year’s LUNA line-up ranges from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, immigration, body image, sexuality, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.

LUNAFEST was established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, in order to promote women filmmakers, raise awareness about women’s issues, and raise money for worthy women’s nonprofits across the U.S. and Canada. LUNAFEST has grown from a single annual event to more than 140 film festivals each season, and has raised more than $470,000 for women’s nonprofits.

Pre and Post Natal Bellydance Spiced with Yoga! This class uses therapeutic techniques from both bellydance and yoga to support prenatal women through the dramatic changes in their bodies and to help postnatal women regain their strength and control of stretched out muscles. Bellydance is such an incredible tool for prenatal women that some health care providers are now recommending it the same way they recommend prenatal yoga. It also empowers women to celebrate the voluptuousness of childbearing. We focus on conditioning drills for more of a workout, rather than choreography and performance skills that train people how to be bellydancers. Yoga warm-ups and cool-downs are also therapeutic, in that moms can bring in their body aches and we will try to remedy them through yoga. Moms are welcome to bring their little ones, but note there is no childcare on-site, so they are responsible to keeping an eye on their own brood. We do not specifically integrate babies into the dance, but a mom is welcome to pick up her child and keep dancing as much as she likes. What is most wonderful about combining pre and post natal is the perspective each group can get from “the other side.”

The Montana Association for the Education of Young Children (MtAEYC) would like to invite you to participate in the Week of the Young Child (WOYC). The WOYC occurs in April and is part of the broader National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Month of the Young Child (MOYC). During MOYC we recognize the needs of young children and thank educators and others involved in building better futures for all children. Week of the Young Child is celebrated across the country by hundreds of local organizations working to improve opportunities for all young children. It also provides opportunities for all of us to recognize the importance of the early years, and to work together to build better futures for all children.

In Missoula, our MtAEYC organization is collaborating with local galleries and museums to offer child-centered exhibits during the April 2010 First Friday Art Walk as well as other child-centered programs pertinent to your organization. There are many ways to make an exhibit child-centered from exhibiting artwork of children or by children offering family friendly music. We are working with the support of the Missoula Downtown Association and the Missoula Cultural Council and hope you will support us through your exhibit or program in April. We can match you with Early Childhood Programs, Public School K-2 classes and local artists waiting to supply high quality art at your request. We will be promoting the events and sponsors for the Week of the Young Child so your organization will be recognized through publicity.

YWCA Women's Leadership Series     Apr 2nd 2010 8:00AM
Location: Planet Kids, which is located in the basement of Missoula Aging Services
Contact: YWCA
Phone: 543-6691
Website: www.ywcaofmissoula.org

    31-Cent Scoop Night    May 9th 2011 12:00AM
    Location: Baskin-Robbins (locally-owned) / 2 locations!
    Contact: Baskin-Robbins
    Phone: 542-2731
    Website: www.BaskinRobbins.com

Baskin-Robbins is hosting the third-annual 31-Cent Scoop Night nationwide and will honor the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). For the event, we will be offering ice cream scoops, waffle cones, topping, and more for only 31 cents each. This third-year event is a great opportunity to honor America’s firefighters and ask consumers to donate to local fire charities nationwide. We expect Missoula firefighters to be on-hand with fire trucks/equipment and to speak with customers and fundraise for local departments.
